Climbing Up the Mountain / Really Jazzy

1. Second half of August 2008 had Saskia Laroo trekking new territory at the NedFest in Nederland, Colorado. After much puzzling and deliberation over how to bring Saskia, pianist Warren Byrd and rapper MC Flow into the NedFest scene convincingly, they were paired with members of Central Colorado standouts the Motet lead by Dave Watts. A truimph, their performance has warranted a subsequent appearance in NedfFst 2009.

2. 27 August – 2 September tour to India and Russia is marked in Saskia’s journal as one of the most logistically difficult tours of the year!

During the period of 27-31 August, Saskia was offered performances in Pune, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. After firming up those dates, our Moscow contact insisted on a string of Saskia Laroo appearances from the morning 31st of August until the 8th of September. Panic! Cut to urgent calls to India to re-organize their dates, surfing booking sites for the flight connections, and frenetic deadline-beating rushings to two different embassies for the proper visas!

3. Also in September, Saskia made her initial voyage in Moldavia. It was righteous – the reception there and playing the Ethno-Jazzfestival is fantastic! Piggybacked to Moldavia was a four-hour trek over the Ukrainian border for a return visit to Odessa; and a very nice return it was,  to perform in the Jazz Festival at the Philharmony of Odessa..

 4. With the generous and enthusiastic support of the Netherlands Trade and Investement Office in Taipei, Taiwan, Saskia and her band toured there for the fourth time. She always feels warmly received in Taiwan and has made many fans there.

5. Brazil is a country of endless possibilities and marvelous music traditions – those are Saskia’s thoughts whenever anticipating the next visit to that pearl of South America. September 2008 she and Warren Byrd were returned to Brazil for several concerts, and to collaborate with the legendary Brazilian percussionist Robertinho Silva.

6. Saskia and band rocked the boat at Kogresova Hall in Warsaw, opening for the Matt Bianco group, and heralding Really Jazzy’s release in Poland. Huge promotion, including an exclusive interview published in Gazeta Wyborczka, Poland’s most widely circulated and read newspaper, insured a capacity turn-out in the 2000-seat ampitheatre indeed. Cool. Cool. Cool. On to India again in December!
