Jazzkia is the title of Saskia's third CD and the name of the quartet she formed in 1995, to cull lovers of acoustic jazz and cross-over music. Whereas the repertoire primarily consists of her original compositions which invoke jazz giants such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and their likes, the Jazzkia concept is a direct homage to Miles Davis. With all this tradition well-absorbed, still Saskia burgeons on the 21st century with relevance, boldness, and originality.
Back in the 1970’s, she schooled in workshops in 1979 by Nedley Elstak, Arnold Dooyeweerd at the Bimhuis and performed free jazz concerts with saxophonist Hans Dulfer quartet (a.o. with Ernst Glerum- acoustic bass). By 1985 she was touring Holland in the ensemble of conductor Butch Morris ( a.o. with Ab baars- reed instruments, Eric Vloeimans- trumpet). Since 1996 Laroo’s Jazzkia has been a Sunday-night fixture in Jazz Cafe Alto and monthly so at Jazz Cafe Casablanca, both in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In 1998 Saskia reconnected with saxophonist Teddy Edwards and recorded an album together in Los Angeles, followed by a series of performances. Since 2001 Saskia stays connected to the U.S. through her musical collaboration with pianist Warren Byrd, with whom she tours and performs throughout the world.
Jazzkia can be extended to Jazzkia+ with extra guest musicians.

Jazzkia is de titel van de derde cd van Saskia Laroo en van het kwartet dat zij in 1995 formeerde, voor liefhebbers van akoestische jazz en cross-overstijlen. Terwijl het repertoire voornamelijk bestaat uit haar eigen composities, die herinneringen oproepen aan het werk van jazzgiganten als Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie en Thelonious Monk, is het Jazzkia-concept een regelrechte hommage aan Miles Davis. Niet alleen is ze stevig in die hele traditie geworteld, Saskia is de 21e eeuw eeuw in gegroeid met muzikale relevantie, durf en orginaliteit.
Saskia leerde haar vak onder meer in workshops die in 1979 werden gegeven door Nedley Elstak en Arnold Dooyeweerd in het Bimhuis, maar ook in de praktijk, door de gratis concerten zij gaf met het kwartet van saxofonist Hans Dulfer (o.a. met Ernst Glerum op contrabas). In 1985 tourde ze door Nederland met het ensemble van dirigent Butch Morris (o.a. met Ab Baars als rietblazer en Eric Vloeimans op trompet).
Sinds 1996 staat Saskia vrijwel elke zondagavond en -nacht met Jazzkia in Jazz Café Alto en maandelijks op een dinsdagavond in Jazz Cafe Casablanca, beide in Amsterdam. In 1998 trad zij op met saxofonist Teddy Edwards en namen zij samen een album op in Los Angeles, gevolgd door een reeks optredens. Sinds 2001 heeft Saskia een sterke binding met de VS door haar voortgaande muzikale samenwerking met pianist Warren Byrd, met wie zij reist en optreedt over de hele wereld.
Jazzkia kan worden uitgebreid tot Jazzkia+ met extra gastmusici.
